Wagga’s French community is inviting everyone to the annual Fete de la Musique (World Music Day) celebrations.
Fete de la Musique is an all-day annual music celebration that takes place on the day of the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice (21 June). The first event was held in Paris in 1982 and it’s celebrated in more than 120 countries worldwide.
On the day, musicians are invited to play music and sing in streets and parks.
Alliance Francaise de Wagga Wagga is hosting Fete de la Musique at Meccanico on Saturday (24 June) at 2 pm.
Alliance Francaise de Wagga member Sue Savage said that even though the event was celebrated on the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, it would still be celebrated on the shortest day in Australia.
“For us being the shortest day and in the winter, it’s not entirely a suitable concept at this time of the year, but we’ll give it a nod because we’re a French mob and it’s something nice to do,” Sue said.
“We’ll take advantage of making the shortest day in the darkness go as quickly as possible by enjoying some music.
“It’s (the event) not on the actual day, but it’s not practical when people are working on weekdays, so we’re hosting it on Saturday.”
Sue said the event would be celebrated with local musicians showcasing their talents.
Musicians set to perform on the day include self-taught guitarist Diya Bhengra, The Black Shillings, who perform music and songs in the Celtic tradition, and a group of cellists.
Alliance Francaise is a worldwide organisation, established in 1883 in Paris to promote French culture and language. Alliance Francaise de Wagga Wagga is one of Australia’s 20 Alliance Francaises.
Alliance Francaise de Wagga Wagga was formed 50 years ago and has been hosting Fete de la Musique for a number of years.
The committee has 70 actively involved members and is runs French classes for all levels, a French for travellers class and has French conversations twice a month.
“We’re a small but vibrant French community adding some cultural diversity to Wagga,” Sue said.
“We would love to meet you and please come along and make yourself known to us.
“We have our biggest event coming up next month – the 16th French Film Festival which will start on Bastille Day (14 July) and run for ten days. There will be nine films and each will be shown twice.”
Sue, a French teacher by trade, moved to Wagga 42 years ago and has had a long association with Alliance including as a student in Sydney and while she lived in Melbourne.
