Murrumbidgee police are appealing for information after a box air conditioner was stolen from a Griffith home during the recent heatwave.

About 9:30 pm on Sunday (25 January), the victim left his rented unit in Kookora Street, Griffith, to go to work in Hanwood. The temperature had hit a high of 45 degrees Celsius that day.

Around 6:30 am the following day, the victim arrived home from work and discovered that his window-mounted box air-conditioning unit was missing.

The victim realised that the air conditioner must have been disconnected from the outside of the unit, as the doors to the apartment were locked and there was no sign of forced entry.

The unit was secured to the window with screws.

About noon the same day, the victim attended Griffith Police Station to report the matter.

Officers are currently investigating and asking anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen anything to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Griffith police on 6969 4299.

A number of Griffith residents had to cope without air conditioning at times during the heatwave, due to power failures. This occurred due to the combination of extreme heat affecting network equipment and increased energy usage at night. Essential Energy has provided further advice.
