Roads off Burley Griffin Way in the town of Binlong that have been accident hot spots for several years are set to get new safety measures, including more signage, a safety barrier and mobile speed camera sites.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Partnerships and Integration South Cassandra Ffrench said the changes were being made in response to community feedback.
“We heard loud and clear that speeding and driver behaviour were the main safety concerns, and the community wanted us to keep Richmond Street access open,” Ms Ffrench said.
“We’ve listened and responded with a revised design that delivers meaningful safety benefits and directly addresses speeding while respecting the village character and maintaining local access.”
Binalong has been the site of numerous accidents over the past 15 years, including a collision between a van and utility which resulted in two men being airlifted to Canberra Hospital with serious injuries.
Between November 2024 and February 2025, Transport received 42 submissions through an online survey, email and a community drop-in session attended by about 30 residents on what needs to change. While 57 per cent of respondents supported safety improvements, the majority identified speeding as the key issue, with 53 per cent calling for speed camera enforcement.
The safety improvements include:
- Installing town entry gateway treatments at the eastern and western approaches to the 50 km/h speed zone
- Installing enhanced curve advisory signage at the intersection
- Installing a safety barrier east of Fitzroy Street
- Recommending the Centre for Road Safety add new mobile speed camera sites at the south-east end of the 50 km/h zone
- Coordinating ongoing speed limit enforcement in partnership with NSW Police.
Official work on enhanced curve advisory signage and a safety barrier will be carried out between 7 am and 6 pm from Monday 23 March for up to two shifts, weather permitting. Work to deliver the remaining safety improvements will be carried out in coming months. Transport will keep the community updated on the timeline and traffic impacts.
