Riverina pilots are invited to the latest pilot safety seminar on Sunday.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is hosting the seminar in Tumut on 13 October for pilots of all licence categories.
CASA said a pilot’s ability to make sound decisions while flying was crucial to preventing incidents and accidents and ensuring safety for everyone.
Aviation safety adviser Tim Penney said the seminar was designed to enhance the skills of pilots ranging from novices to those with extensive experience.
“Our seminar feedback shows pilots get more out of a session when there is a range of experience in the room and lots of discussion because it is our shared knowledge that creates a safer environment for everyone,” Mr Penney said.
“We also use case studies during the seminars to show how things can go wrong and to prepare pilots for mitigating those risks.
“These seminars are also a great chance for pilots to talk about any safety issues in your local area with safety advisers and other local pilots to address them.”
The safety seminar will cover topics including the basics of human communication, aviation communication rules and procedures, real-life examples of communication failures, techniques and strategies to improve transmission, the use of an Aerodrome Frequency Response Unit (AFRU), and standard aviation communication practices.
CASA said there were many benefits to attending the seminar.
Pilots would gain practical tips on operating safely and efficiently, and an understanding of what influenced decision-making in safety industries.
They would also have the chance to interact with CASA AvSafety advisers, ask questions in a supportive environment, discuss any issues in their local area and meet other aviation professionals.
CASA’s AvSafety advisers host free seminars yearly for pilots at various locations across the country to encourage them to refresh their skills and knowledge and enhance their safety.
The Tumut seminar is designed to equip pilots with the tools to make sound decisions and operate safely by workshopping fuel exhaustion and starvation, decision-making and general competency rules.
Pilots are welcome to ask questions about rules and regulations.
Tumut’s aviation safety seminar will be on Sunday, 13 October, from 3 pm to 5 pm at Tumut Aero Club, Wee Jasper Road. Pilots are encouraged to register their interest online.
