Australia Post has officially opened a new delivery centre in Corowa in NSW to help manage increased parcel demand. The facility replaces the former parcels delivery site, with greater efficiency to handle up to 350 parcels a day.

The positive news comes as the organisation faces a backlash in the Riverina/Murray area for downgrading services in Coleambally and abandoning its historic building in Narrandera.

According to a media release, the Corowa centre reflects “Australia Post’s long-term commitment to strengthening services in regional communities and ensuring they remain well supported as customer needs continue to evolve”.

“With eCommerce and online shopping continuing to grow, this new site gives us the capacity we need to keep pace with demand and maintain reliable, on‑time delivery for our customers. This purpose-built facility not only boosts efficiency but also provides a safer, more modern working environment for our team members,”  Australia Post senior executive Shane Plant said.

Australia Post said the new facility was purpose‑built to support the region’s long‑term growth, helping local posties process parcels earlier in the day and get out delivering to customers sooner across Corowa and surrounding communities.

The centre will process more than 225 parcels per day, increasing to around 350 during peak periods, which it says will support continued growth in online shopping across the region.

The building features a spacious 450 sqm layout, incorporating a dedicated letter processing area and a large warehouse to enable efficient truck unloading and parcel sorting.

There is also a fully electric site powered by rooftop solar panels, which reinforces “Australia Post’s commitment to more sustainable operations”.

The announcement comes just weeks after Australia Post faced a huge backlash for downgrading its services in Coleambally.

The town’s long-standing licensed post office closed suddenly on 6 February for reasons that have not been publicly explained.

Some services resumed the following week at Marilyn’s Pharmacy, but key functions are missing. The new outlet does not offer banking, BPAY bill payments or PO boxes.

Retired farmer Peter O’Connor said this meant elderly residents with no car had had to figure out a way to get to Darlington Point, which is 33 km away, for those services.

“It’s not good enough. Australia Post isn’t there to be a money-making arm of the government. It’s providing a service to the community – if it loses money, that’s how it should operate,” Mr O’Connor said.

Australia Post was also accused of firing a delivery contractor after she publicly criticised a downgrade of mail services in Coleambally – a claim the organisation says is inaccurate.
