Australia Post says it is hopeful of maintaining mail services in the Riverina town of Coleambally, after it is was revealed the current Licensed Post Office (LPO) is set to close.
Postal services in small towns are often run by private companies or individuals on behalf of the government enterprise Australia Post.
The only mail service in Coleambally has been run by Ledwidge Pty Ltd from 33-35 Brolga Place since 2014, but it will cease operation on Friday 6 February.
A long-time Coleambally resident told Region he was worried the LPO would be downgraded and replaced by a Community Post Agency, which is a lesser, part-time service run from another business such as a newsagency or pharmacy.
“There is concern among residents who have paid for Post Office Box services that these boxes won’t be renewed,” he said.
“That would mean that the boxes would have to be relocated to Darlington Post, which is 20 minutes away. That will be very inconvenient.”
However, an Australia Post spokesperson told Region he was hopeful this wouldn’t happen.
“Australia Post is in advanced discussions with a potential operator to maintain postal services in Coleambally,” the spokesperson said.
“We will provide the community with an update as soon as we can.”
Coleambally has had a postal service in town since 1970.
Region will provide an update of this situation in the coming weeks.
