The attempted online sale of a bed in Griffith has been reported to police as an alleged fraud.

At about 5 pm on Tuesday (8 July), a buyer was looking to purchase a king-sized bed and found one for sale from the online marketplace website Gumtree for the price of $350.

The buyer contacted the seller, who allegedly wanted the money transferred online, using the excuse they wouldn’t be home to accept the cash.

The seller also informed the buyer they couldn’t pick up the bed yet as they weren’t in town until 5 pm. The seller gave the buyer an address in Griffith to pick up the bed.

At this time, the buyer paid a $50 deposit into the account of the seller. The buyer was quickly contacted by the seller and told the transfer didn’t work and to try paying again, this time to a different account.

The buyer at this time believed they were being scammed so they contacted the seller from a different phone and were offered the same bed and were told by the seller that they wouldn’t be home until 7 pm, this time for pickup.

The buyer then reported the matter to Murrumbidgee District Police, who are investigating.

NSW Police has provided an information sheet to help people avoid becoming victims of online scams on its website.
