NSW Police say they will not be taking further action over a viral video showing the alleged bashing of a teenage girl at Wagga Wagga’s Sturt Mall, saying the incident was not reported to police at the time and the alleged victim did not wish to pursue the matter.
The footage, published by 7News Riverina this week, appears to show a group of children repeatedly punching and kicking a girl who is lying on the ground inside the mall.
It is understood the incident occurred last year but has only recently been shared widely online, prompting renewed concern about youth violence in Wagga’s CBD.
A woman commented on the news story on Facebook, saying the girl in the video was her 16-year-old daughter and that she reported the matter to police and claimed no action was taken. Region has reached out to her to find out more.
The resurfaced video has reignited debate about safety in Wagga’s CBD, where a number of assaults and incidents of antisocial behaviour involving young people have attracted community attention in recent months.
Riverina Police have responded with a series of high-visibility operations targeting crime and disorder in the city centre. Recent patrols have resulted in 11 arrests, the seizure of an allegedly illegally ridden trail bike, the recovery of an allegedly stolen vehicle and numerous traffic and licensing infringements.
Police have indicated those operations will continue, with additional patrols and targeted enforcement aimed at reducing offending, improving community safety and maintaining a visible presence in the CBD.
