Narrandera finally has a permanent location for its post office, two years after the service vacated the East Street building it occupied for more than a century.

The Federal Government originally purchased the East Street building and launched the postal services in 1900.

It owned the two-storey red brick structure until 1989, when mail delivery was corporatised. The newly formed Australia Post remained government-owned but began to operate like a self-funded business.

Australia Post vacated the site in August 2024 after concerns that the historic building was subject to lead contamination, resulting in the post office being moved to a demountable site at 92 Audley Street before moving to Cadell Street in 2025.

Nearly two years later, a new permanent post office has opened in the town despite ongoing concerns that Australia Post might have abandoned the idea of ever returning to a permanent location.

Located at the new address of 57 East Street, the Narrandera Post Office replaces the temporary post office on Cadell Street and includes parcel delivery, financial services such as Bank@Post, identification services and a variety of retail items including business supplies, stationery, and core postal products.

Australia Post General Manager Retail Operations Sarah Coe said the new post office reflected Australia Post’s commitment to upgrading services for the community.

“We’re focused on building a modern Australia Post for a modern Australia, ensuring regional communities like Narrandera can continue to access convenient and reliable services close to home,” she said.

“We love the fresh, modern upgrade of the new post office, and we’re looking forward to welcoming locals and business customers from today.

“We know the local post office remains an essential connection point, which is why we’re protecting access to these services.”

Australia Post confirmed that existing PO Box customers would also benefit from upgraded boxes and new keys, stating it would provide secure and convenient access to their mail.

Meanwhile, customers of the post office, including Sew Fab Narrandera, said the new post office provided confidence within the community that necessary services such as mailing and banking weren’t being abandoned.

“It is so good to see the post office return to the main shopping district, making access far more convenient for myself as a business owner and locals,” owner of Sew Fab Leanne Ivanoff said.

“Having a new permanent home also returns confidence within the community that the post office is here to stay in our town.”

The new Narrandera Post Office officially opened on Thursday 6 August and will operate Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
