ACT companies have won two of seven categories at this year’s Telstra Best of Business Awards, held in Melbourne last night (23 March).
Region, publisher of Region Riverina, Riotact, About Regional, Riotact China and the Property Guide, won the national award for building community.
The category recognises companies “working to make a positive impact on culture and society so people from all walks of life can thrive as part of a supportive community”.
The judges commended the company’s strong vision for the future, well grounded business plans and outstanding dedication to building strong local communities.
Event MC Rae Johnston said “Region Group’s commitment to generating and promoting editorial content with a strongly local focus greatly impressed the judges, as did its ability to replicate a successful regional model.
“Region is well positioned to scale its thriving independent access to media in regional areas of Australia that are currently doing without.”
Co-CEO Michael McGoogan said “the wonderful outcome tonight is entirely due to the great work our team does on the ground”.
“Every single local journalist and every member of our business team is doing the hard work at the coal face, actually doing the right thing for the community and we are so proud of them all,” he said.

Canberra technology business the Mullion Group won the Embracing Innovation category, for businesses innovating with technology to develop solutions for challenges faced by modern Australia.
The Australian-based software and consulting company is internationally recognised for its expertise in greenhouse gas inventory systems for the land sector.
The group measures and projects the value of land-based greenhouse gas emissions and removals and, from their data, provides insights that inform policy. Multiple data sets are brought together from multiple formats to give customers the most detailed information possible about carbon impacts.
The company was founded by Dr Rob Waterworth in 2014 and is now a global operation with offices in Canberra, the US, UK and Melbourne.
“We feel euphoric,” Margo Sachse from the Mullion Group said.
“It’s amazing to get national recognition for all the hard work we’ve done over many years.”
“This is the information that can help customers meet net zero targets for 2050. We have target to meet but no way to get there.”
The national business of the year award went to Winyama Digital Solutions from Western Australia, who also won the national indigenous excellence award.
Winyama is led by Andrew Dowding, a Ngarluma traditional owner from the Pilbara. The indigenous owned and operated business specialises in Geographic Information Systems and Cloud solutions and works with commercial, public sector and First Nations organisations to create digital solutions that optimise the management of the indigenous land estate in Australia.
