An abandoned Riverina service station was left in ruins following a fire that also posed a threat to a nearby home.
Fire and Rescue NSW said the blaze broke out in Larmer Street, Narrandera, just before midnight on Sunday (24 March), taking a few minutes to devour the abandoned building and cause parts of it to collapse.
FRNSW immediately deployed a dozen firefighters and three fire trucks from the township and nearby Leeton.
There was no identified risk of explosion as the site had been decommissioned several years ago and the petrol tanks were taken out of service.
Fire crews fought for more than three hours to control and extinguish the fire, while a nearby house was protected with a water curtain.
FRNSW also deployed remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), or drones, to inspect safety hazards and zero in on reignition points. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Fire crews remained at the scene on Monday (25 March) to extinguish any potential hotspots.
The site was yesterday handed over to NSW detectives, who continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire, which they are treating as suspicious.
Anyone with information or video/dashcam footage about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
