It would be difficult to find someone anywhere in the world who has not heard the name William Shakespeare.

Widely considered the most important author in history, Shakespeare’s works, such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet and many more have influenced fellow writers and performers across the globe.

In Wagga Wagga, the world’s oldest Shakespeare Club will perform the incredibly silly show, Something to Crow About, at The Thirsty Crow next week.

Something to Crow About follows Mr Shakespeare at the time of his writing some of his most influential works – Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Taming of the Shrew.

Challenged with overcoming some difficult circumstances, Shakespeare interacts with some wacky characters who influence his own works, ultimately leading to the works we all know and love today.

More than 20 cast members are set to take part in the production and director and one of Wagga Shakespeare Club’s longest-serving members, Fay Walters, said there is a nervous excitement heading into the first show.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to see the dedication to get this up and running,” she said.

“This is a very, very different space from where a lot of cast members have ever performed before. The Thirsty Crow, giving us that venue, was just a godsend.

“A lot of the sets within the show are based in an Ale House, so we wanted to put the show on in a similar space. The Thirsty Crow was very generous in offering us this space to perform and by having it there, it will really add to the atmosphere of the production.

“We’re really excited, because it’s such a demanding venue, if you like, because it’s so spacious, so that means there’s a lot of reverberation and echo. But I think once it’s filled with people, it’ll be great. And I think everybody is getting to the point where they’re just ready for an audience.”

Opening at the Thirsty Crow on Friday 18 July at 7 pm, the show will be running at the popular brewery for two weekends – Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 1 pm.

Tickets for the show will also include a meal of the purchaser’s choosing. All money raised by the event will be donated to the Kooringal Rotary Club.

“As a fundraiser to support Kooringal Rotary, this show has brought together a combination of actors from the community, plus a band of newcomers from the Wagga Shakespeare Club,” Ms Walters said.

“It’s been great for the group to create a new profile within the community and by giving back to those at the Kooringal club.”

The Wagga Wagga Shakespeare Club was founded in 1904 and turns 121 in July.

Something to Crow About will open on Friday (18 July) at 7 pm. To purchase tickets to one of the six shows, visit the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre website or call the box office on 6926 9688.
