A Yenda man has been admitted to hospital and his kitchen was badly damaged after he tried to ignite a fireplace by pouring petrol on toilet paper.

At about 4:30 pm on Friday (20 June), the 47-year-old man was in his rented property at Yenda when he attempted to light the fire in the lounge room.

The man poured petrol on both toilet paper and a rag from a Jerry Can before throwing the doused items into the fireplace and lighting them with a cigarette lighter.

Upon lighting the items, the fire flashed back at the man, setting fire to the residual petrol on the outside of the Jerry Can.

The man attempted to extinguish the Jerry Can before placing it inside the kitchen area.

He thought he had doused the flame and returned to the lounge to put out a small spot fire outside the fireplace.

Whilst the 47-year-old was doing this, the Jerry Can became fully alight in the kitchen before spreading rapidly.

Retained firefighters from the Fire and Rescue NSW Station 512 Yenda and various Rural and Fire Service (RFS) crews attended and extinguished the blaze by 5:50 pm.

NSW paramedics attended the scene, where the man was assessed and taken to Griffith Base Hospital for observation. The kitchen suffered significant fire damaged.
