Registrations are now open for the Wagga Wagga NAIDOC Week march and flag-raising event taking place on 7 July from 10 am.
First Nations Elders, community members and allies are encouraged to register for the march down Baylis Street and the flag-raising event at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre forecourt.
A free bus will be provided for Elders and community members who need assistance.
NAIDOC Week is held annually on the first week of July (6 to 13) across Australia, with 2025 marking the 50th year of the event. The week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It also presents an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories.
This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy”, seeks to celebrate both past and future achievements, empowered by the “strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors”.
The city council’s community development coordinator Alex Osgood said Wagga Wagga should be proud of the diverse range of NAIDOC Week celebrations happening in its community.
“NAIDOC Week lands in school holidays again this year and it’s always wonderful to see community groups and organisations planning meaningful NAIDOC activities to give everyone in Wagga Wagga an opportunity to participate, learn, share and celebrate,” Ms Osgood said.
“During NAIDOC Week, several events will be held in Wagga Wagga, with Wagga Wagga City Council hosting a march down Baylis Street along with a flag-raising event on Monday, 7 July, from 10 am.
“The march will start on Morgan Street near Baretta Lane, then head down Baylis Street to the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre where the flag-raising ceremony, Welcome to Country, and smoking ceremony will take place at about 10:30 am.”
Aside from the march and flag-raising, Wagga residents can also participate in a Deadly 3X3 Basketball Gala Day on 10 July from 9 am at the Equex Stadium in Copland Street.
Groups and individuals can register for the march by contacting the council on 1300 292 442 or via [email protected].
