Police investigate after six wedge-tailed eagles found shot dead near Junee

Police are appealing for information after six wedge-tailed eagles were found shot dead in the Riverina at the weekend.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District were told an injured juvenile eagle was found on a property on Dollar Value Road, Eurongilly, about 22 km southeast of Junee, last Saturday (5 April).

A woman called wildlife rescue service WIRES, who attended the property the following day (Sunday 6 April) and – after further investigation – found six juvenile wedge-tailed eagles were dead.

The eagles appeared to have died at different times and been moved to the paddock.

All birds – including the injured bird – were taken to a veterinary hospital; however, the injured eagle was later euthanised due to its injuries.

After examining the bodies, the vet told police the birds most likely died as a result of being shot.

The incident was reported to Riverina Police District on Tuesday (8 April), and an investigation commenced.

Police are appealing for anyone who has any information or heard anything unusual in the vicinity to contact Junee Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The wedge-tailed eagle, also known as the eagle-hawk, is the largest bird of prey in Australia. Wedge-tailed eagles are a protected species in Australia. If convicted, offenders can face fines or up to two years’ imprisonment.
