A Leeton man who was run over in a tractor accident has been rushed to Canberra Hospital for treatment.
At 8:30 am on Saturday (5 April), the 85-year-old man was teaching his 15-year-old grandson to drive on a tractor in the rear paddock of the family farm between Leeton and Whitton.
At one point, the tractor moved forward at speed, causing the elderly man to be knocked down by the tractor’s rear tyre, which then ran him over. At the time, the tractor had a Scarifier attached to the rear, which dragged the man some 15 to 25 metres.
The 15-year-old boy contacted family members who rushed to the farm, as did members of the Volunteer Rescue Assoication (VRA). The 85-year-old man was eventually freed from the scarifier, though he sustained considerable injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics. The man was then driven to Griffith Airport, from where he was flown to Canberra Hospital for specialist emergency treatment that could not be provided in Griffith.
