A fire that burned down a tenanted residential home that was once the site of a Bilbul bakery is being investigated by police.

Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers from Bilbul, Hanwood, Yenda and Griffith were called to extinguish the blaze at about 1:30 am on Friday 31 January.

They were assisted by Fire and Rescue Yenda and Griffith squad members and NSW Police.

Observers say police officers remained on the scene for 24 hours.

“The RFS were called back at 4:30 am to put out fires that had reignited and to keep it contained and make sure it didn’t impact neighbouring properties,” RFS operational officer Justin MacKellar said.

“It was a tough night. Most of our RFS troops then had to go to their normal day jobs the next day.

“Our guys also went back at 4:30 pm on Friday afternoon to assist with an overhaul and to help clean it up.”

The dwelling was the site of the Bilbul Bakery between 1934 and 1962. At the time of the fire, it was a tenanted residential home. Region understands the tenant was not harmed.

Former bakery employee and 2MIA community radio host John Bortolazzo expressed his sadness about the fire on social media.

“It serviced the Bilbul area and as far as Hanwood, Beelbangera, Yoogali and parts of Griffith,” he said.

“I did my four-year apprenticeship there from 1953 and worked there until it closed in 1962.

“In that time, it was also the social hub for the Bilbul younger set.

“A lot of great memories in that place.”

“Our crews have shown exceptional dedication and resilience, responding swiftly even in 40-plus degree temperatures. Their efforts in protecting lives, property, and the environment are truly commendable; often volunteering until the early hours of the morning then going to work as per usual. We extend our gratitude to all involved for their tireless service and professionalism,” RFS management said.

The MIA District RFS is always looking for more volunteers. It invites members of the public who are interested in becoming a member of the NSW RFS to call on 6966 7800, drop in at 200 Wakaden Street, Griffith or visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au to find out how to join.
