The much publicised redevelopment of Leeton’s Roxy Community Theatre is back on track after the Federal Government finally agreed to make a further contribution to progress the project.
The 1930-built art deco structure is being redone to include an enhanced foyer, two cinemas and a performing arts school. After many delays and setbacks, the revamped facility is scheduled to be reopened later this year.
Appeals for federal support had been falling on deaf ears until this week, when it was announced that the Albanese Government would contribute $800,000 towards Stage 2 of the Roxy Community Theatre Redevelopment Masterplan.
Upon completion, Stage 2 is set to deliver a multipurpose theatrette, function kitchen and stage management office, in the building adjacent to the refurbished Roxy auditorium. This will increase the venue’s capacity and flexibility.
Leeton Council will match the Federal Government’s contribution with $800,000 from existing, preapproved funds to ensure the total amount to fully realise Stage 2 will reach $1.6 million. The council’s total contribution to the project is just over $6.5 million.
Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Lead for Arts and Culture Michael Kidd said council was delighted with the news and would aim to get things underway as soon as possible. He thanked the Commonwealth for their investment.
“Once contracts are exchanged, we will aim to have trades back on site as soon as possible to complete the full vision for the redevelopment,” he said.
“While some disruptions are likely, council will be able to complete the Stage 2 build without interfering with the Roxy operations in the auditorium given that most of the remaining works are situated in the adjacent building.”

In making the announcement, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King said: “Quality infrastructure in regional areas is invaluable and this funding will build and upgrade key facilities that can be enjoyed by communities for years to come.”
Deputy Liberal leader and Member for Farrer Sussan Ley also welcomed the news.
“Stage two of the project adds important operational elements to this wonderful old playhouse and comes on the back of years of advocacy by the shire and Leeton community,” she said.
“It’s also just in time to make sure she is all dressed up for her 100th birthday in a few years.
“It was great to be there at the ‘soft launch’ recently and witness what really is a loving restoration. Having previously secured development funding for the Roxy through the Coalition government, I was pleased to help push for this latest grant which matches a commitment by council. Well done to all; can’t wait for the grand opening.”
Leeton Council says it will keep the community abreast of the project through future media releases and virtual tours once construction has recommenced.
