A 15-minute fireworks display will draw more than 10,000 people to Lake Albert this New Year’s Eve, with Wagga Wagga City Council returning to host the event.
Kicking off at 6:30 pm on the Lake Albert foreshore, the popular event will feature more than 10 food vendors and will finish with one of the biggest fireworks spectaculars Wagga has ever seen.
“It will be a great way for families and friends to get together to say farewell to 2024 and welcome in 2025,” said council’s destination and events coordinator Kimberly Parker.
“It’s a beautiful spot to sit back in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere and enjoy good company, good food and a great fireworks display.
“This year we are anticipating between 10,000 and 12,000 people will flock to the lake for the event, so we’re encouraging those planning to attend to head down early.
“Find a spot along the foreshore of the lake to set up your camp chairs or picnic rug and then settle in and enjoy a family evening.
“You can bring along a picnic to share with friends and family, and there will also be a range of local food vendors located at Apex Park offering a range of delicious sweet treats, small snacks and refreshments throughout the evening.
“When the fireworks finish, attendees can head home to continue their celebrations or venture out to other venues across the city where more local celebrations are being held.”
Ms Parker gave a small hint as to where the best viewing spot for the fireworks may be, suggesting the closer to Apex Park the better.
Residents and eventgoers are advised that traffic conditions on Eastlake Drive, Lakeside Drive, and Lansdowne Avenue will be changed for the event. Detours and traffic management will be in place.
“If you live within walking distance of the lake, we encourage you to leave your vehicle at home and walk instead so you don’t have to worry about parking,” Ms Parker said.
“For those planning to drive to the event, remember to allow extra travel time to take those traffic changes into account and to find parking.”
Ms Parker also reminded those travelling to the city after the event to have fun but remain cautious and make sure they have a Plan B.
“It’s a busy time in Wagga where everyone’s celebrating the year that was and welcoming in the new year. We’re encouraging people to consider their safety and enjoy it,” she said.
“We also would like to encourage people to take their rubbish home with them.”
Regular bus and taxi services will be available for the event.
