Wagga Wagga residents are being invited into a world of vivid storytelling through dance, aerial stunts, and choreography.
Zana Aerial Dance Academy’s much-anticipated end-of-year showcase, The Institute of Dreams, will take place on Saturday 9 November at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre.
The Institute of Dreams tells the story of a shady institute that studies dreams, featuring a circus troupe of research subjects and a scientist with undisclosed dreams of their own.
The performance will include giant spiders, pole-dancing zombies, and overzealous missionaries waiting in the wings to turn dreams into nightmares if the bumbling researchers step one foot wrong.
The audience will be treated to an exciting adventure through the world of dreams, from aerial silks to breathtaking lyra routines and heart-stopping acrobatics — portraying dreams of flying and softly falling.
Zana Aerial Dance Academy performer Nic Steepe said The Institute of Dreams would feature beautiful dream and nightmare sequences as part of this year’s show.
“We’ve been preparing for four to five months, and we’re excited to showcase all different types of skills,” Nic said.
“This year, we’re having a pole at the Civic Theatre … we have some portable ones, which is an addition to what we did last year.
“We want to make it bigger and better every year, and we want Wagga to come, see us perform, and support local artists and our fabulous studio.”
Nic said the showcase would include four scenes and 20 routines.
Zana Aerial Dance Academy co-owner Tanya Shaw said she and her sister, Heather Shaw, had wanted to incorporate a storyline into their show for a long time.
“Heather has a background in writing and worked with the performers to build a fun story exploring dreams and the subconscious while also showing off all the amazing tricks and choreography that people have come to expect in Zana shows,” Tanya said.
“We’ve been doing two shows a year since we opened back in 2013, but this is only our second time taking our show to the Wagga Civic Theatre.
“We’re very excited for the show. The studio is buzzing with all the preparations, and the last-minute creative ideas are flowing.”
Tanya said the students and performance team were a huge part of making the story and show come together.
“We can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve put together.”
Heather said an amazing, vibrant, and diverse community had grown around the studio.
“As it has, our aspirations have focused on providing a fun, safe, and inclusive space where the community can thrive,” she said.
