The alleged Wilks Park stabber has been discharged from the hospital and is in custody in Junee.
NSW Police told Region Kenneth Jones was discharged from Wagga Wagga Base Hospital on Friday (11 October) at 6 pm and taken into police custody.
Jones’ case was heard at Wagga Wagga Local Court on 16 October after he was charged with allegedly attempting to evade police following a stabbing in North Wagga Wagga on 10 October.
The 33-year-old did not appear in court, but his solicitor, James Read, informed Magistrate Gareth Christofi that his client was in custody at Junee Correctional Centre and requested an adjournment for the brief to be served in December.
Jones has been charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He did not apply for bail, and the court refused it.
Earlier police reports said Riverina Police District officers were called to Wilks Park, North Wagga Wagga, about 12:30 pm on 10 October following reports of a shooting.
On arrival, police were told a 42-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed with a pair of scissors by Jones. And soon after Jones was shot by a third man, who fled the scene.
Before police arrived, the 42-year-old man had left the park and later presented himself at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, suffering a neck wound. He was treated and released on Friday.
Police located Jones in the Murrumbidgee River, a short distance from Wilks Park. However, he refused to give himself up, instead swimming to an island and climbing a tree.
Following a police operation, the man was arrested at about 2 am on Friday and taken to a hospital, where he remains under police guard and in a stable condition.
Police established a crime scene and found a firearm and a pair of scissors, believed to have been used in the incident.
Both items were seized and will be forensically examined.
Following further inquiries, officers attended a hotel on the Sturt Highway, Gumly Gumly, and attempted to speak to the man around 12:30 pm on Saturday (12 October).
He allegedly refused to leave the room, leading to a police operation involving local officers and specialists including the Tactical Operations Unit and police negotiators.
At about 10 pm, police entered the room and deployed a Taser to arrest the man after he allegedly produced a knife.
He was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for assessment and later transferred to Wagga Wagga police station on Sunday.
Both Jones and the 35-year-old are set to face Wagga Wagga Local Court on 11 December.
