Griffith Blacks rugby juniors Fletcher Robertson, 16, and Oscar Dossetor, 14, have been selected to play for the ACT Brumbies Under 16 squad.
The duo, who also attend Griffith High School, have both had standout seasons for their club sides.
“We got selected to trial in Canberra a few weeks ago. They put us in different teams and we played actual games. From that, they selected a squad of 35 players. They’ll now pick 24 players, as well as some shadows,” Oscar said.
“We have a trial game in a couple of weeks against the Under 16s NSW Waratahs side. If we make the cut after that, we play against all the Australia teams. But if I miss out, I’ve still got next year, as I’m only 14.”
Oscar comes from a well-known sporting family. His dad, Jason, has coached him since he was in the under sixes.
Jason is also a talented tennis player who once teamed up with brother Danny to beat a young Nick Kyrigos in a doubles match at the Griffith MIA Open.
Oscar also has plenty of lawyers in his family and has that as a fallback career option.
“I’d like to go to university in Melbourne and study law,” he said.
Fletcher wants to be a sports teacher.
“I enjoy all sports but particularly love the physical side of rugby. I prefer watching it to league; it’s more interesting and I understand it more. I play anywhere in the backline, but my preferred position would by fly half. My favourite player is Nic White [Brumbies and Wallabies half-back].”
Leeton’s Jack Clark, Thomas Johnstone and Riley Legge and Temora’s Cooper Gersbach and William Tudulu were other Riverina players in a squad otherwise dominated by players from Canberra Catholic schools.
Those who make the final squad of 24 will play in a Rugby Australia competition that features the Melbourne Rebels, Western Force, NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds, as well as the ACT Brumbies this month.
ACT Brumbies Head of Junior Academy and Talent ID Andrew Clark has been happy with the region’s talent who have been in training with the Brumbies Academy these past few months.
“It is a very exciting time of the year where a lot of our juniors look towards testing themselves against their interstate counterparts,” he said.
“Competitions like this are great in strengthening our junior pathways system and exposing players to high level competition.”
Four female players from the Griffith Blacks rugby club have also been selected for the ACT Brumbies Country women’s squad – front-rowers Seigia Seukeni, 30, and Fay Saula, 25, halfback Sophia Kelsey, 19, and winger Megan Lonsdale, 17. The quartet will play their first game for the ACT Brumbies Country team against a city squad on 14 September.
