A passionate group of Leeton residents have asked their community to attend a series of Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) workshops over the next week in their latest bid to improve health services in their town.
The Leeton Health Services Crisis Committee (LHSCC) was formed in February 2022 in response to the “demise of the once prestigious Leeton District Hospital”, which no longer has a doctor working onsite. The group have been working collaboratively with the MLHD and Leeton Shire Council.
LHSCC first promoted an MLHD survey to gather information, experiences and ideas about Leeton health services. The next step of community engagement is a series of six workshops held from yesterday through to 25 August.
Leeton mayor Tony Reneker has urged the public to attend.
“There has been lots of talk about our local health services, now is our chance to speak up and be heard,” he said.
LHSCC chair Maryann Iannelli said the workshops were an important key to shaping the future of Leeton’s health services.
“Only we can tell them what we want,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to create a positive change for our community.”
There will be four workshops for the community to attend and two specifically for Aboriginal people who would prefer to attend specialised sessions. The first session, for the Aboriginal community, was held yesterday.
The upcoming sessions are:
Thursday, 18 August 10 am – 11 am at Yanco Hall (general community)
Wednesday, 24 August 6 pm – 7 pm at Whitton Hall (general community)
Thursday, 25 August 9 am – 10:30 am and 5:30 pm – 7 pm at Hydro Hotel Leeton (general community)
Thursday, 25 August 12 pm– 1:30pm at Leeton Library (specific Aboriginal community workshop)
Those interested in participating in the workshops are asked to register their attendance as soon as possible via survey money.
Community input from the workshops will help inform MLHD and Leeton Shire Council’s health strategies.
LHSCC says they have received more than 800 responses to the MLHD survey.
“We’ve had such a great response to the surveys so far, let’s keep that momentum going by encouraging your family and friends to complete this survey,” Cr Reneker said.
“Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) and council values input from community and welcomes your thoughts and feedback.”
The Leeton Health Services survey is still available to complete directly via this link or by filling out a paper copy available at Leeton Shire Council reception and Leeton Shire Library.
