Man charged over alleged Ashmont assault

A man was arrested on Saturday (6 July) following an alleged assault in the state’s southwest.

About 10 am on Saturday police were called to Wagga Base Hospital after a man presented with life-threatening injuries.

On arrival, police were told a 31-year-old man was involved in an alleged physical altercation with a 33-year-old man who was known to him outside a residence in Ashmont on the evening of Friday (5 July).

It is alleged that during the altercation the 31-year-old man hit his head before he was taken home by a witness.

He was later flown to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District established Strike Force Fegan and began an investigation into the incident.

Following inquiries, about 12:30 pm on Saturday (6 July) police attended an address in Ashmont, where they arrested a 33-year-old man.

The man was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court.
