The winners of Region Riverina’s For the Love of Local art competition, displayed at the Wagga Wagga Marketplace, have been announced, with Ethan Dyason of Estella Primary School taking first place.
The competition attracted 20 entries from 10 local schools and showcased some of the Riverina’s most iconic locations and features. Entries were displayed at the Wagga Wagga Marketplace.
A panel of three judges – Region Riverina editor and artist Chris Roe, Wagga Marketplace community marketing manager Chloe Sutton and Little Yellow House artist and teacher Lindy Farley – voted on the top three artworks that best met the competition criteria while also being aesthetically pleasing, creative and original.
The results were:
1st place – Ethan Dyason – Estella Public School
2nd place – Lorelai Overvliet – Sacred Heart Primary School
3rd place – Willans Hill Class 5
As the winner, Ethan won $1000 for his school with a $50 Casey’s Toys voucher, while Lorelai won $750 for her school and a $30 Casey’s Toys voucher, and Willans Hill Class 5 won $350 and a $20 Casey’s Toy voucher.
Ethan said he was excited that people enjoyed the artwork on which he had spent a great deal of time.
“It was really good to be able to win this competition. I’m so happy people enjoyed it and I’ll be making more art soon,” he said.
The $1000 prize for the People’s Choice Award went to Patricia-Lee Arnold, from Tumbarumba Public School, for her work The Yarn Circle. More than 850 people voted for their favourite entry by scanning a QR code or visiting the Region Riverina website.
Ms Sutton said the competition was a fantastic showcase of the talents of the Riverina’s young artists.
“It was so pleasing to see so many kids and schools take part in Region Riverina’s first school art competition,” she said.
“Countless shoppers have stopped to look at the artworks and pointed out a lot of recognisable locations like the Wagga Beach and Lake Albert.
“The Marketplace would like to thank all those who entered the competition and to keep encouraging young artists. Congratulations to the winners. They were deserving.”
