It has been a worrying time for the family of teenage Canberra Raiders player Jacob Iosefa after he suffered serious injuries in a car accident on 1 May.
Jacob, who impressed in the Raiders’ SG Ball side this season to the extent that his contract was extended by another two years, was driving back to Canberra from his home city of Wagga Wagga when the crash occurred.
While it has been an anxious time for the family, there has been some good news with Jacob regaining consciousness after being placed in an induced coma at Canberra Hospital.
He has been released from intensive care, although he is still under observation at Canberra Hospital.
The Raiders issued a statement saying that he will remain at the hospital for an indefinite period.
The club posted a picture of Jacob smiling in a wheelchair earlier this week. This provides every indication that he is in good spirits and on the road to recovery.
The Raiders and Jacob’s family also thanked all those who have offered assistance, with a special mention to Ronald McDonald House Canberra for their support of Jacob’s family while they are in Canberra.
Meanwhile, a GoFund Me organised by Bec Holland, a workmate of Jacob’s mother Evelyn at Star Track Wagga Wagga, has raised over $20,000.
The money will help the family with medical, accommodation, transport and other expenses associated with the emergency.
Says Bec, “The response so far from the amazing community we have has been overwhelming. Friends, family and colleagues; what we have raised for the Iosefa family so far has blown my mind.”
Jacob’s healing is only beginning, but all signs are pointing to a positive recovery.
