Riverina Conservatorium of Music (RCM) students will be taken out of their comfort zone when they put on a cabaret performance at The Curious Rabbit this week.
The program features music for all – from the classics, with songs by Lloyd-Weber and Mary Fahl, to the classical, with interpretations of Bach, Telemann, Mozart, Beethoven, and Grieg.
Curious con Cabaret will allow music-lovers to hear some of the region’s finest talents while sipping wine and enjoying delicious snacks on Thursday 23 June from 7 pm to 10 pm.
The Conservatorium selects technically and musically advanced students to participate in the public recital to gain experience in a commercial venue.
RCM Chief Executive Officer Hamish Tait said The Curious Rabbit venue gave students the opportunity to play in a slightly different location.
“We’re (RCM) trying to take off the blinkers a little that concerts always have to be in one hall,” Mr Tait said.
“The Curious Rabbit has a lovely little place with artworks on the wall, and that has a nice call back to history.”
The RCM allows the students to perform in public every two weeks. In the even weeks of term, the students have recitals at the Conservatorium. In week nine, students perform at The Curious Rabbit at 44 Johnston Street, Wagga Wagga.
RCM publicity officer and concert manager Kylie Dunstan said performing in a public venue opened students up to the life of a musician.
“This is what you do to prepare to perform outside the Conservatorium,” she said.
“It is a lot of fun. It is another safe environment, but it is open to whoever might walk in the door.
“It is not a set stage. This is what a musician’s life can be like – they are not all there to sit and watch you.”
Ms Dunstan said The Curious Rabbit’s owner, Vickie Burkinshaw, had been very supportive of the Conservatorium.
“We’re grateful to Vickie, who has opened up the venue for us to use once a term and stage our students,” she said.
The students have been preparing for the recital for the entire school term.
The cabaret will feature 16 students, with some accompanying staff. There is a senior flute ensemble, senior guitar students, guitar ensemble, vocalists, and other instrumental performers.
The recital will go for an hour to 90 minutes with an intermission for people to top up their wine and grab something to eat.
