If you think it’s been a little hotter than usual, you’re not wrong. So far this January, temperatures in the Riverina are four to five degrees above average and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) says we have the right recipe for storms.
BoM meteorologist Helen Reid says, with the current heatwave, nighttime temperatures are also on the warmer end of the scale.
“We’re seeing these warm temperatures for several days,” Ms Reid says.
“While we’ve got the warm temperatures tomorrow (Saturday), they’re only dropping one or two degrees on Sunday and Monday.”
While there was a lot of rain last summer, the meteorologist said the thunderstorm season didn’t develop.
However she says this year is shaping up as a hot humid summer with afternoon thunderstorms on the cards.
That pattern is set to continue for about a week, before a change comes through.
“Warmth and humidity, fairly crucial ingredients for thunderstorm development, are present,” Ms Reid says.
“We can expect them in the eastern parts of the Riverina and getting into slightly higher country. There is a possibility of thunderstorms throughout the Riverina and broader areas of NSW.”
Wagga is expected to reach a top of 37 degrees on Saturday. It will be mostly sunny with a 20 per cent chance of a shower and a possibility of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon.
On Sunday, you can expect 38 degrees.
It will be a sunny morning with a 60 per cent chance of a shower or two, most likely in the afternoon and the evening. Up to 4 mm of rain is expected.
Ms Reid says the average January temperature for Wagga is 31.9 degrees celsius, and Griffith is 33.2 degrees celsius.
“It is a fair bit warmer (this year),” Ms Reid says. “Hay is going for 40 degrees, and the average is 35.1 degrees celsius.”
