It seems Wagga has a growing spooky underbelly with hundreds of kids hitting the streets during a break in the weather last night to terrorise their neighbourhoods in the search for sugar.
In our poll last week, we asked “Will you participate in Halloween celebrations this year?” and a curmudgeonly 79% of you replied, “No, it’s unAustralian and I hate it!”.
However, the proof is in the pudding as the saying goes and Wagga’s youngsters were out in force on Monday evening dressed as zombies, witches, skeletons superheroes and fairies.
Costume shops and discount stores did a roaring trade over the weekend, as kids and adults alike stocked up for private parties and supermarkets sold lollies by the kilogram.
My favourite costume of the night was a teenager who donned a check shirt with a pen in the pocket, cargo shorts, sneakers, glasses and a mug of coffee to go out and about as her dad.
Even with the general grumpy vibe among the older generations and repeated complaints that its an “American thing” (usually made by people who wear blue jeans, drink bourbon, drive Fords, listen to rock n roll and watch superhero movies – but apparently reject all things American!) many houses across town were decorated, and the kids came home with more than their fair share of loot.
