Nine things to do in the Riverina this week (21 - 28 October)

Despite the big river, there’s plenty on across the Riverina.

The flowers are blooming and the gardens are open for inspection. There’s live music, stand-up comedy, jewellery workshops, markets and movies.

Fingers crossed that the forecast rain stays away!

If you fancy a movie, the Rock stars in the latest superhero flick Black Adam. His character escapes from 5000 years of imprisonment and, armed with the powers of the Egyptian gods, unleashes ‘justice’ on the modern world. Also showing Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and Chris Pine in Don’t Worry Darling and Australia’s Margot Robbie in Amsterdam. Or if you fancy a scare, Jamie Lee Curtis is back to finally put a stop to Michael Myers’ murderous shenanigans in Halloween Ends.

Riverina Iris Farm Open Garden

When: Weekends until 12 December and weekdays by appointment

Located to Wagga’s southeast, Riverina Iris Farm is inviting visitors to come and see their thousands of irises in bloom. Expect a spectacular display and a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy a cuppa on the weekend.

On Friday (21 October) Aaron Oldaker is at Tilly’s front bar from 6 pm, Reece Mastin is at Tilly’s from 7 pm, AJ & Ty are at The RSL Club from 7 pm and Satin-Cali are at The Vic from 8 pm. On Saturday (22 October) Rory Phillips is at The Riv from 7 pm, Michelle Robertson is at The RSL Club from 7:30 pm, Stripped Back are at Coota Ex-Serviceman’s from 8 pm, One Shot Too Many are rocking the Woomargama Hotel from 8:30 pm, Isaac Staines is at The Blamey from 9 pm and Crooked Crows are at Tilly’s from 9 pm.

CMRI Christmas Fair

Cost: Adults $5, payable upon entry.

Yep, Christmas is looming large and the CMRI Christmas Fair is a chance to get a head start on shopping. Held at Wagga’s Murrumbidgee Turf Club where the Fair goes for two days and boasts over 100 specialty market stalls from all over New South Wales. The Fair has run over the last three decades and raises money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Metal Stamping Workshop By Murrawalirra

If you fancy learning a new skill, head to the Curious Rabbit on Saturday afternoon for the Metal Stamping workshop with Max Lyons from Murrawalirra. You’ll learn the basic metal stamping techniques and come home with your own piece of art jewellery.

Dane Simpson – Didgeridoozy

Fresh from his debut appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe, Wagga funnyman Dane Simpson brings his award-winning show to his hometown for the first time. Expect gut-bustingly funny stories, live didgeridoo and plenty of laughs.

Movies by Moonlight: Pretty Woman

There’s nothing like watching a movie under the stars and Borambola Wines is making a night of it at Movies by Moonlight with the film that made Julia Roberts into a mega star – Pretty Woman. There will be live music, a drink on arrival and plenty of house wine available. Bring a friend, pack a picnic and enjoy a moonlit movie.

Junee Show

We all love a country show and this weekend Junee is the place to be. The Junee Show has been going for more than 125 years and has something for everyone including rides, animals, pavilion exhibitions, showgirl events and sideshow alley attractions.

Coolamon Rotary Garden Viewing

When: Saturday 22 October, 11 am – 4 pm
Where: Five locations
Cost: $15, purchased from 26 Doubleday Lane, Coolamon.

Coolamon Rotary Club is proud to showcase five of the region’s best gardens with two on acreage and the other three on residential blocks in town. Food, drink and even Devonshire teas will be available at two of the gardens with funds raised going to the Coolamon-Ganmain Hospital, Allawah Lodge Aged Care Hostel and other local projects.

Griffith Spring Fest – Citrus Sculptures

When: Friday 21 to Sunday 22 October
Where: Banna Avenue, Griffith

This weekend is your last chance to check out the 70 larger-than-life sculptures created with over 100,000 oranges and grapefruit in Griffith. The stunning Garden Festival also includes seven beautiful open gardens including talks and workshops.
