A man has been charged after police seized a commercial quantity of cocaine and ice in the western Riverina.

Officers attached to Traffic South West, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting patrols of the Hay area shortly before 2 pm Friday (17 October), when they stopped a black Jaguar F-Pace on the Sturt Highway, about 150 km west of Griffith.

The driver – a 30-year-old man – was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned a negative result before being subjected to a roadside drug test, which also allegedly returned a positive result.

When the man was searched, police will allege they found cocaine and cash in his possession.

Officers conducted a search of the black Jaguar and seized more than 5 kg of methylamphetamine (ice), almost 11 kg of cocaine, more than $130,000 cash, and two mobile phones. The drugs have an estimated potential combined street value of over $6.3 million.

The driver was arrested and taken to Hay Police Station, where he was charged with seven offences:

  • Supplying a prohibited drug equal to or more than large commercial quantity (two counts)
  • Recklessly dealing with the proceeds of general crime with value of $100,000 or more
  • Goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen (three counts)
  • Possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear before Griffith Local Court on Wednesday 29 October.
