Local veteran support agency, Pro Patria, has received a timely financial boost from the Australian Government.

As part of the latest round of the Veteran Wellbeing Grants Program, more than $71,000 will be allocated to the facility to aid 30 current and former serving veterans.

The annual Veteran Wellbeing Grants program aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the Australian veteran community by supporting projects and activities that sustain or enhance health and social wellbeing, build community capacity, expand on existing services and raise awareness of important issues faced by the veteran community.

Member for Riverina Michael McCormack has endorsed the government’s decision, stating the investment will allow the Wagga Defence Shed to expand and continue its work.

“Pro Patria Centre, along with Defence Shed Wagga Wagga, has been doing a power of good for veterans and this $71,000 in funding, through the 2024-25 Veteran Wellbeing Grants Program, will help the centre enhance the wellbeing of 30 veterans and Defence personnel through social connection programs and skill-building activities,” Mr McCormack said.

“This grant will allow Defence Shed Wagga Wagga to expand its services to give veterans the opportunity to develop new skills, boost confidence and improve social connections and community ties.

“Through developing practical skills through these programs, veterans enrich their future employment prospects.”

Pro Patria Director Jacqui Van de Velde welcomed the announcement and said the funding would support the centre’s programs, particularly through its association with Defence Shed Wagga.

“Since its inception, Pro Patria has been delivering on its core mission to provide an innovative multidisciplinary facility to help veterans and first responders, develop skills to become more self-reliant and provide support to manage their own well-being and enable them to better adjust to post-service life,” she said.

Senator Deborah O’Niell applauded the work conducted by the Pro Patria Centre, while also highlighting the importance of aiding Defence personnel.

“The Pro Patria Centre is a worthy recipient of this funding, delivering essential services to current and former ADF personnel and their families in Wagga.

“I am proud to be part of a government that continues to support Defence personnel long after their active service has ended.

“These wellbeing grants are an investment in the men and women who have given so much for Australia.”
