Work to improve a hazardous stretch of the Snowy Mountains Highway that intersects Black Creek Road near Adelong commenced on Monday (22 September).
The $7.1 million project, which was announced in December last year, will be carried out on a section near Adelong, from 1.6 km west of the intersection at Black Creek Road to about 200 metres east.
Work will take place from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 6 pm, as well as Saturdays between 8 am and 1 pm.
Upgrades are expected to finish by late April next year, weather permitting.
This project is part of an almost $30 million investment under the Australian and NSW governments’ Road Safety Program, which aims to improve road safety and reduce crashes on NSW roads and highways.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson hoped the work would make the stretch safer for residents.
“This area of the Snowy Mountains Highway is narrow and steep with limited area for recovery if a vehicle was to leave the road,” the spokesperson said.
“The project will involve road widening to improve the curve as well as installing safety barriers and improving drainage.”
The nearby Darlow Rest Area will be closed for the duration of the project for the safety of motorists and workers.
Single lane closures, traffic control and reduced speed limits of 40 km/h will be enforced while work takes place.
Motorists are advised to be mindful of road conditions when driving, allow an extra five minutes of travel time when passing through, and comply with the directions of signs and traffic control.
Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.
