Highway Patrol Police have allegedly found 2000 illegal Manchester Light cigarettes in a vehicle that was stopped for speeding in Narrandera.

At about 7:30 am last Friday (6 June), police stopped a Blue Toyota Corolla bearing Queensland Registration Plates for allegedly exceeding the speed limit by 16 km per hour in a 50 km per hour residential zone.

The vehicle was being driven by a 29-year-old male and was pulled over at the intersection of Audley Street and Irrigation Way.

The driver was spoken to and submitted to a breath test with a negative result. This conversation and observations of the man gave police cause to search the vehicle.

During the search of the Corolla, police will allege they located numerous boxes of illicit cigarettes, and loose tobacco totalling 2000 Manchester light cigarettes sealed and packaged for sale.

The loose tobacco was weighed and returned a total weight of 3 kilograms with a total street value of $3000.

The sale of Manchester cigarettes, which do not contain the federal government’s mandatory health warnings, is illegal in Australia.

The man was issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice in relation to the illegal tobacco offences and will appear before the Narrandera Local Court in the near future.
